alt_lucius: (Cajole)
With everything that has transpired this week, forgot to mention to you: Rabastan's private service is to-morrow.

Trust you understand.

Would like to meet, however, sometime soon. Much to discuss. May not be able to get away much in the next few days but my diary has been more-or-less cleared for the family crisis.

Say when.
alt_lucius: (Default)
Aspiring to a place in Our Lord's circle is, simply, the highest goal any witch or wizard may hope to achieve. All else pales in comparison to serving Him personally. Certainly, it is a day Mrs Malfoy and I have anticipated for our son since his birth. That he, and all the others of you, are being offered the opportunity to prove yourselves so early in life is honour indeed.

The last time Our Lord initiated new members of the Council while they were in school (or so close to completing it), it was wartime. Recruits were sorely needed. Perhaps it is in a fitting tribute to those days that Our Lord was inspired to devise this crucible wherein you will be tested. Be assured that not only your sponsors, but the whole of the Council will be watching the proceedings closely, ready to welcome whomever rises to the top, and making note of others along the way whose potential may not yet be tempered to perfection.

Good luck to one and all.

Draco: Anything we have needed to say has been said. Make us proud.

Hydra: You have been singled out among your class but there can be no question of your right to compete at the same level as your elders. Your aunt wished me to convey her fond hopes for your success.

Miss Parkinson: Best of luck, my dear. Remember your heritage and the traditions to which you are also heir.

Harry: Your task is no less important. Your Father has given you a solemn responsibility. Of course you will not wish to disappoint. My best advice is to trust your instincts, knowing as you do your Father's mind (as much as any of us may presume to do that!). Do not hesitate to consult those around you, should you need it, for guidance, however.

Razzer: It seems you are to be entertained first-hand. Enjoy the display and bring your customary sobering influence to the proceedings, for surely there will be a need to maintain discipline in the face of the contests ahead.

Minerva: You are no stranger to the imposition of chaos into the school. Trust you are aware of your duty both to Our Lord and to the Governors to balance the necessities of the challenges posed to the candidates against the need to provide a meaningful education to those not participating. Should you find yourself in a quandary, however, the Governors are prepared to forge a clearer path for you.

Antonin Nikolaevich: I should have thought it obvious what Our Lord's decision signifies. Out of deference to our long friendship, shall trouble you no more on the subject. Should you wish to reconsider your words, you know where I am. Thank you, as always, for your kind advice.
alt_lucius: (Profile)
All things considered, Raz, am grateful your festivities were planned for this late in the day.

And though it was far from the bachelor party we would have wished, nonetheless, all the best to you and Aurora.

See you shortly.
alt_lucius: (BreckGirl)
Just a friendly warning to you both.

Suspect that your infuriating fuscia fatarse may be on something of a warpath. Have taken measures to mitigate her latest attempts to destroy the school.

According to the Ministry, owls were sent to the parents of students currently preparing for O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s informing them that they may, if they so wish, engage tutors (with the proper certification) for one-to-one revision at school.

Meanwhile, Tosha, have heard that you are doing all you can to ensure your pupils (and Razzer's) are ready for their examinations, with or without the opportunity to obtain practical application outside of lessons.

Razzer. What can any of us do to remove the intolerable restrictions on our movements against the pink menace?
alt_lucius: (1000YdStare)
Problem?

Please tell me that Draco was not one of the ones responsible.

Tosha, if there are any parents whose children were involved, to whom you'd rather have me speak, but say so.
alt_lucius: (Smiling)
New London has cloaked itself, it would seem, in a holiday spirit. Noticed the fairy lights through the trees that line Pall Mall this morning, before it lightened enough to dim their twinkle.

It is all the more refreshing to be back in the light of Our Lord's grace, as well. Though sadly, not all of us returned, nor could be in Court to receive His rewards for our work across the sea. (Went to see Yaxley this after-noon, briefly: He is recovering but still struggles with aphasia and simple function.)

But, useless to dwell on such morbidity. Our efforts have restored peace to the region and prove, beyond shadow of doubt, that subduing the muggle threat is the only way to maintain that peace.

Moreover, as contentious as the last two weeks have been, it was a delight to see my fellow Councilwizards back in the thick of work they were born to do. Minerva, Tosha, Raz: particularly good to have your talents on our side in the field. (And as a Governor, I hope we did not keep you from scholastic duty so long that your students have suffered overmuch.)

As for Ireland, anticipate that the Minister's tour will find our allies eager to co-operate and show him every courtesy.

Unfortunately, the affair has put one far behind on other matters; to-day was spent nearly entirely in reviewing the journals, owls, messages and other backlog of correspondence which could not be addressed in my absence. To-morrow shall be a day full of old business, as well, apart from confirming the interim head of MLE (Bella has threatened disembowelment if she is required to manage the minutiae a day longer). Next week, perhaps, we may proceed properly to new business.
alt_lucius: (Closeup)
The worst is over.

There is still far too much to accomplish by way of rooting out the conspirators but we seem to have broken the core rebellion.

Will still be a few days here, cleaning up. Expect Fudge shall arrive by end of week.

Unsure yet about whether we need to reschedule our week-end; on one hand should dearly love nothing more than an island, a loaf of bread, a jug of wine and you; on the other, circumstances may dictate that I keep the journal open whilst there, which rather defeats the purpose of going.

Too tired to think clearly about it, at any rate.

Tosha has some of his fire back, though confess I was keeping half an eye on him the whole battle long.

Your sister was in her glory, my love: She claimed over 50 kills on the spot and believes that she took one of Dumbledore's old agents, along with some three or four others, with a curse of her own devising. Of course, time will tell on that one.

Rod, the Razzer and Barty all fine. Claudius - not so lucky. He's with Healers now. We should know more in a few hours.

Must go, darling, or drop where I sit. Have only until noon before I am due in the war room.

But know that I am, forever,

Yours.

-L
alt_lucius: (Smiling)
Have either of you been glancing through the children's journals?

Well played, bratishka. Believe the effect you desired has been achieved. In spades.

Raz, forgive the intrusion, but must point out: It may not have occurred to Rodolphus yet but I did see the look on your face when our brother here so-casually mentioned the relationship budding between our niece and Stephen's defector. Confess myself as surprised as you or Rod that our Tosha sees so much in the lad - but then, know better than to doubt his instinct, which has so often led us to valuable compatriots in the past. Good luck, when Rod realises that you've known and not told him before. (And for some time, if I am not mistaken?)

Then again, at least you've reminded him that you are far from an easy target.

(Not that it matters much to me, one way or the other. Particularly if Toshenka believes he can bring the boy under his wing.)

Still chuckling over that remark of - which of your students, Toshenka? A seventh-year by the look of him - that he'd never thought of duels lasting so long. And how we all said almost at once, 'Usually, they don't.' Hope he's not in your NEWTs (and if so, then you are entirely correct that your work has been made manifest. Let it never be said we underestimate your ability to fashion miracles!

Do you think Dominic has quite got over his own shock at the breadth of your casting? Must remember to invite him into one of our sessions at the Elysian. Suspect he's itching now to find out just how he'd stand up in a proper contest of skill.

Almost jealous of you both for seizing the chance to make clear your prowess; but thinking how exhausted you both were, and seeing how much was waiting for my attention on my return, perhaps it was as well to leave you both to the exertion. (Do not take that as either challenge, or the fear of one, however!)

Blast, but it is late. Expect you both to be sleeping the sleep of the just. Ought to follow your example in that, as in other things.

My thanks again, gentlemen, for a highly amusing day.
alt_lucius: (Skeptical)
Good to see you both this after-noon. Must admit the social hour before and following did put our other tasks behind, a bit, and returning from those, naturally, found the day's correspondence grown to mountainous proportion. Still have a personal note or two if to-morrow is not to begin already behind.

Trust you both found to-day's (yesterday's, one should say!) educational presentation edifying. Harry looked a bit tense, during the bout. Draco, is he all right? Glad to see you appreciated the display for all it was, and led the others in a properly jovial, but respectful, light.

Antonin Nikolaevich tells me you are both showing great promise, already. Not surprising, but good to hear his professional assessment, nonetheless.

He has his eye on a few others, as well, who were much more ... unexpected. But that is his way.

Be careful, however: He is incorrigible. If you let him he shall ply you with all manner of temptations, suited to your particular interests, in order to bend you to his will. No doubt soon enough he shall supplant even your favourite professors as your tutor of choice.

Speaking of favourites, did not have much of a chance to speak to either of you privately. Wished to ask you: How has the CCF programme been thus far, under Madam Umbridge? (Be honest, both of you; should expect you both might feel any positive comments are disloyal to its previous mentor. Have no fear of your opinions generating unwanted repercussions.)

Well. It is late. Though you shall doubtless not see this before morning, should observe brevity and proceed through my other notes, in order to sleep, as well.
alt_lucius: (Smiling)
Have made appropriate excuses for Saturday. Narcissa still committed to her ... something. WI, I think. Not that she is normally eager for their programmes but it had to do with her involvement in the planning (I try not to know too much about such things). Not sure where she derives the tolerance, frankly. At any rate, she will be sorry to miss you but asked me to make her apologies.

Tosha, understand from entirely different sources that you are already leading merry hell among students and staff alike. Not surprising, considering the examples they've had to date. Had quite the time convincing Theo to give you the benefit of the doubt, before stirring up the Governors to think you are exercising professorial privilege to the detriment of his son. (More likely that you're the only source of discipline the boy's likely to get, and none too soon. Theo has always been ... difficult to appease, as you know. Have him becalmed for the time being, however.)

Also understand from Ned you've been making free with your library. Careful, bratishka; recall that these children have limited capacity to separate external fact from exotic fiction, even if they know they are reading the latter. (Currently am embroiled in just such a debate concerning publication of the latest in a popular but troublesome trilogy whose author - well. Her gift for analogy is matched only by her penchant for predictability. Likely will recommend allowing production to proceed but anticipate another rash of illicit reading to rival the sudden upsurge of interest in the other (ridiculous) Intra Profundis.) Suffice it to say: You are no doubt already recognising the challenges of controlling a large group of pupils at once, all of whom would far rather be practising the techniques described in your tatty romance novels than in their dry meditation books! The last thing they need are 'manuals' on every form of phantasy imaginable.

Speaking of hormones, have you had occasion yet to rebuff the attentions of Professor Acton? Razzer, do point out to him her various attempts so he can be sure not to give the poor witch false hope.

Looking forward to Saturday, both the demonstration and the expedition afterward.
alt_lucius: (Drunk)
I take it all back; this is vastly diverting. In its wild inaccuracy, if nothing else!

'Dominic's' hair ... 'Dolores' as a lithesome, gracious, curl-headed brunette .... Must not laugh aloud - but Morgana, it's difficult.

I will admit that your imitator, Raz, has some of your mannerisms down pat (the obvious advantage of paying attention to your lessons, no doubt). And the girl portraying Barty is quite good - I think in fact she does his sneer better than he himself!

Ari, if there's any young lady your boy's trying to impress, it's clearly Miss Moon. Otherwise how could he possibly associate himself with this farce?

Ahha-- Norah!

(Pardon. Narcissa is helpfully digging her nails into my thigh so neither of us dissolves into peals of laughter. Suspect we shall find ourselves both relieved and excessively sorry we did not indulge with much wine at supper.)
alt_lucius: (Annoyed)
Our rainy day is progressing well enough, if one can set aside our youngest member's fussing. Not surprisingly, Bella won the last round of Hexagonal - though there was a dead heat among three of us for at least thirty minutes prior to two repetitions in quick succession to give her the win. Quite impressed with how quickly Draco has absorbed his new textbooks and the suggested lists of spells at the back. Harry held his own for a good portion of the game as well.

Barty, we've decided to take tea - and Razzer, Rodolphus and I have decided to take something more medicinal to keep off the chill, if you're interested. (Have no fear of the toddler: Bella grew impatient and summoned the child's nurse to take him next door for a lie-down over an hour ago.)

Minerva, Horace, I can only surmise that you received a copy of the same request Peakes and I did. I shall leave it to you to answer. Crispin, you might check with Peakes' clerk to make sure his office is sending the response - if not, you'll need to send Form 3A to Ginevra Weasley. I believe the family are causing mayhem at Stornoway currently but given the exchange we've all just seen, they may return home sooner than scheduled.

We've been invited to the Moot Hall to-morrow evening for a small reception and, we're told, a local traditional dance. Suspect the boys would rather decline, though Narcissa seems interested and Hydra has already asked if she might wear some of the robes her Aunt helped her pick out over the summer, before they must be packed away in favour of school uniforms. Much depends on the weather, I think, and whether we all feel the need to escape the confines of the cottages by to-morrow.
alt_lucius: (1000YdStare)
Have been discussing Narcissa's continued quest for a holiday late this month. Shall need to be sure we have all Draco's books and such prior to the trip as there will not be time between returning and his departure for his third year (impossible as it seems to credit that he will begin third year!). I understand that she, Barty and the Razzer made great use of their four hours yesterday to evaluate three of their remaining possible sites. Had hoped to have a decision by the end of the week; doubt this will be possible given that none of the three of them were able to break away to-day for any other visits. Still. The list has been gleaned, and likely will again, before we must simply choose among the best of the bunch.

First of the month accounts have been settled; Wizarding Wireless board met on Monday with no particular news of moment. Except perhaps that there is a proposal to create a second signal with varied programming. It is felt that this will create jobs and satisfy the growing demand for additional (wider) range of programmes. Lively discussion: I do not think old Glendower has stirred himself to such animation in perhaps twenty years! Appreciate the desire to increase the market for jobs, particularly with the numbers of halfbloods who have been unable to return to work and subsequently lost their previous positions; not convinced that expanding the WWN is an appropriate response.

Received post from Amanda: back from the honeymoon and busy settling into their new home, closer to Beauxbatons. She enclosed a photograph taken at the Jiaohe Ruins near Turpan and promises Narcissa a length of silk, a ginger jar and a tea set in bone and silver, as well as carved bone haircombs 'as soon as ever they can be unearthed from the packages' and sent through the post. She does sound as though they spent a lovely time, and notes that 'Etienne collected some near-perfect early Tang scrolls which he hopes to incorporate into his lessons very soon.' Reading between the lines, it seems Mother has apparently already begun to wonder how soon she will be a grandmother again. (No need to rush, my dear sister!)

Narcissa informs me that this autumn will be as busy a season as the summer: We have received invitations to no fewer than four weddings, three engagement parties, three coming-of-age presentations, five birthday celebrations and eight anniversaries before Halloween! Clearly we shall have some difficult decisions to make as they cannot all be satisfied.

Minerva, I hear that congratulations are in order to you, as well, having made your selection of a home in town. Though perhaps 'in town' is a misnomer. Chiswick, really? And you are leaving it open to touring hours? I shouldn't wonder if you need to hire in a hit-wizard to guard your doorstep against petitioning parents wishing to bring their complaints in person. Nonetheless, I look forward to seeing you in residence from time to time. I do hope you have received the figures we discussed at the last Board of Governors' meeting. As it is the summer holiday, I should expect that the staff have had no pressing demands and have been able to fulfill the Board's request.
alt_lucius: (Queue)
Harry, it was very good to see you this afternoon. I do take your point about remaining in Buckingham instead of going on more enjoyable holidays but you must understand that at the present, particularly with the fugitives still evading capture, it would be ill-advised to remove you from the additional protections your Father's home affords - without making careful provision, that is.

You'll be glad to know that we have already begun preparations for the Young Protectors' League trip so that you will be able to join the group as is your right. I'm sure you realise that my time is very limited at present, through my return from France on Saturday, but I assure you that I shall discuss the matter further with Our Lord and Mrs Malfoy. We may yet be able to arrange some sort of holiday, with Rabastan along of course, so that you can spend at least some of the remainder of summer outside the city. It will have to be prepared carefully, so that your whereabouts are as protected as your person, but if it can be properly organised, I assure you it would be our pleasure to have you accompany us.

In any event, I am glad you and the Razzer are getting on so well. I think you'll agree it would be much more tortuous to spend time in the constant company of one who is not so genial as he is.

Our first walk-through of the old artillery barracks is to-morrow. Weasley, I hope you're prepared to manage on your own for a few hours? If you've the revisions to the reply to Hawkins, bring them in, if you please.

Narcissa, I've an owl inviting us to the Harris garden party on the 23rd. The date is familiar for some reason, but Crispin has no note in the calendar. Have we a conflict that I've forgot?
